Budgie Aviary Information

A well built aviary is the best home that you can give your budgie. A budgie aviary will give your birds room to fly around and you will get the best chance to observe your budgies.

In the wild budgies are used to having lots of space and being able to roam at will. So your budgie will really enjoy having the extra room.

Having an aviary also gives you the chance to keep compatible birds along side your budgie. Other small parrots like the cockatiel or the zebra finch will live happily with your budgie. You should never keep smaller birds like canaries with your budgie though, as your budgie will probably bully them.

Basic Aviary Design

There are many different designs that can make up a suitable aviary, but a few features have to be present in all of them. The aviary will need to have and open area for outdoor flight and a sheltered sleeping area.

Budgies are very susceptible to draughts. So some care should be taken to make sure that the sleeping area is draught proof as well as well ventilated.

Aviary Construction

Usually aviaries are made out of timber with wire mesh or weld mesh screens, and a double door for security. Ideally you should build the aviary on concrete or some other hard surface that can be sluiced down and is rat proof.

Even when you take sensible precautions when building the aviary, you will have to remain vigilant against rats. They can climbs the wire mesh and gain access through the eaves.

Placement

You should put the aviary where it will catch the sun in the morning or the evening, but not in the full heat of the day. Part of the open flight area should offer shade and protection from the weather at all times.

Furnishing The Aviary

The sleeping area will need to have plenty of perches. Ideally the perches will all be at the same height, otherwise the birds may fight over the higher ones. The perches should be in a variety of diameters so that the birds don’t get cramp from always gripping on to the same sized perches.

If you choose to provide nesting boxes, they can be hung in either the sleeping area or the flight area. Nesting boxes just need to be secure, dark boxes with popholes and a hollow in the floor where the eggs can be laid. Budgies don’t need to be given any nesting materials, but lining the bottom of the boxes with sawdust will make cleaning easier.

The flight area needs to have lots of perching, some of it under the protection of the main overhang, but not all of it. Budgies sometimes like to soak in the rain. You also need to put a table in the main flight area that you can put food pots on.

Water containers and other accessories like cuttlefish bones, swing and ladders can be suspended from the ceiling or attached to the wire mesh. Mineral licks and bunches of seed grass are also great candidates to be hung from the wall screens and mesh.
