Budgie Beaks – Budgie Beak Information

Your budgie uses his beak in a lot of different ways. Your budgie’s beak is one of the most important things in helping him to survive. So let’s take a look at some of the ways your budgie uses his beak. And look at some of the problems that can affect budgie beaks.

Eating

We’ll get the most obvious one out of the way first. Your budgie uses his beak to dehusk seeds so that he can eat the kernel inside. If he couldn’t get the hard shell off the seeds, then your budgie would starve. Not good.

Feeling out Surfaces

Your budgie also uses his beak to test whether surface are stable, and can support his weight. In the same way that we might use our arms or legs to test if a branch can support us, your budgie tests it out with his beak.

As you can imagine, there would be a lot fewer budgies around if the kept jumping onto branches that snapped under their weight.

Self Defense

If you’ve ever been bitten by a budgie, you’ll know that it stings a lot. That sharp little beak can cause a lot of pain for such a small bird. If you haven’t been bitten by a budgie, then I don’t recommend trying it.

Budgies aren’t normally violent. They’re prey animals that prefer to escape from predators rather than fighting. But as a last resort, or if they are particularly annoyed, then the beak is your budgie’s primary weapon.

Problems

Most budgies will never have a problem with their beaks. But there are some conditions that affect the beak. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Your budgie can get an overgrown beak. This is where the beak grows faster than normal and doesn’t get worn away fast enough. This condition can cause some serious problems for your budgie. If it is left untreated then your budgie won’t be able to eat any more, as the beak is too overgrown to work properly.

Luckily an overgrown beak usually just needs trimming a few times a year. You can leave this to your vet. Or if it needs trimming often, you can learn to do it yourself.

Excessive growth is the most common condition that can affect the beak. But it doesn’t have to cause any real problems.
