Budgie Cages Information, Choose The Best Budgie Cage

Choosing The Right Cage For Your Budgie

Ideally budgies should be housed in an aviary, but cages can do just fine. Caged budgies need more attention than those that are housed in larger open spaces. And they need to be let out every day to stretch their wings.

Budgies housed in cages will need more human interaction to keep them entertained. They usually respond to you by singing and talking. A few interesting toys will also make up for the small living area.

What To Look For In Budgie Cages

Choose as large a cage as possible, your feathered friend will want a lot of space to move around. No one likes living in cramped conditions.

The bars of the cage should be horizontal. This will help your budgie grip on with his feet, so that he can climb around. Your budgie would probably slide down vertical bars when he tries to grip on to them.

Where To Put The Cage

Budgie cages should be put in a room where the bird will get human contact. The room where your budgie is housed also needs to be safe for when you let him out to fly around.

You shouldn’t put the cage in a draught or direct sunlight. Both of these can have a bad effect on your budgie’s health. Some owners like to put their budgie’s cage on a portable stand that can be repositioned easily.

Furnishing Your Budgie’s Cage

Your budgie needs to have a few essentials in his cage. He will need a few perches. You should place some perches next to the food and water sources. There should also be a perch high up in the cage for use most of the time, as budgies like to be high up.

If possible give your budgie perches in a few different widths. Having different sized perches available will help prevent your budgie from getting cramp and other foot problems. Small fruit tree branches make great perches, and they’re free.

There will also need to be food and water containers in the cage. A cuttlefish and mineral block are also important furnishings, to help keep your budgie healthy. You can read more about budgie food on the budgie diet page.

Having a few interesting toys in the cage is a must as well. Bored budgies will get depressed and start pulling their feathers out, which is sometimes a hard habit to get rid of later. A mirror, ladder and swing are good options. Be careful not to overcrowd the cage though.
