Budgie Diarrhea

Budgie diarrhea can sometimes be easily explained, like if your budgie has been exposed to a temperature drop or a draught. Sometimes though, it can be the symptom of an underlying condition.

Most of the time budgie stools are a green and white color and they harden up pretty quickly. When a budgie has diarrhea the stools may be runny and watery and might even contain blood.

There is no need to worry about the occasional runny dropping. But if the droppings are watery for several days then you need to do something about it. If your budgie looks sick as well as having diarrhea then you should seek out veterinary advice as soon as possible.

Your vet will most likely need a stool sample to analyze. Some illnesses can be diagnosed through this analysis.

Causes Of Budgie Diarrhea

Diarrhea in budgie can be caused by quite a range of things. Just like there are many reasons why you can get an upset stomach. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Has your budgie eaten something that they shouldn’t have? Rotten seed, fruit or vegetables that have gone off or another harmful material could be the cause.
  • Has your budgie caught a cold? Getting exposed to a draught or another sharp drop in temperature might be the culprit.
  • Does your budgie get a balanced diet? A simple lack of grit could be the cause of the diarrhea.

If you can’t work out the cause then your vet will probably be able to.

Treating Your Budgie

If your vet has prescribed some antibiotics then follow the instructions for the full course of treatment. With treatment the infection will probably clear up pretty quickly.

When the diarrhea is being caused by a cold, keep the budgie warm. Make sure that plenty of water is available and add a vitamin supplement to the water. You should cut any fruit and salad out of the diet as well.

If your budgie’s diarrhea is brought on by poisoning then there is most likely nothing you can do about it on your own. You should contact your vet at once, as treatment might be available.
