It’s hard to imagine a budgie without feathers. We can all see how important feathers are to a budgie. But there are a lot of questions we can ask about feathers, and I’ll try to answer some of them. Questions like:

  • Why exactly are your budgie’s feathers important?
  • What are all the different reasons for having feathers?
  • Are there different types of feather? & what are they?
  • What problems can your budgie have with his feathers?

The Importance of Feathers

Your budgie’s feathers useful in more than one way. Obviously feathers are important for flying. Without any feathers a budgie would be pretty much helpless prey for any passing predator. The budgie wouldn’t be able to travel around to find food and water either.

But the feathers serve other purposes as well. Feathers keep your budgie warm, giving him some protection from cold temperatures and chilly breezes. Without the protection that feathers give here, your budgie would most likely die of cold.

Budgie’s also coat their feather with an oily substance that makes them waterproof. This means that your budgie can sit in the rain without getting stranded. And he can fly around even if the weather isn’t perfect. A great bonus if you need to get away from a predator.

Different Types of Feathers

Not all of your budgie’s feathers are the same. Feathers on different parts of your budgie’s body have different purposes. And they are different sizes and shapes to reflect this.

Your budgie has long feathers in the tail and on the wings. These feathers help your budgie to keep airborne. The long tail feathers are used to help your budgie balance as well, and help with steering when flying around.

A budgie has lots of smaller feathers covering the chest and the majority of their body as well. These small fluffy feathers help your budgie to stay warm. These feathers seem to come out and get replaced quite often. And the feathers on your budgie’s head are different again.

Problems with Feathers

Like any other body part, a budgie’s feathers can get affected by different problems now and then. Some problems won’t cause much harm, others can be devastating. Let’s look at some of the possible problems.

General damage: comes from the rough and tumble of everyday living. Feathers can get knocked, scraped and caught in your budgie’s day to day life.

Often this isn’t any real cause for concern, unless your budgie appears to be in pain. If you think your budgie is in pain, then it’s off for a long wait at the vets. Otherwise, it’s just a case of waiting for worn out feathers to get replaced by the next molt.

French Molt: is a condition where the budgie’s large wing feathers fall out at around four weeks of age. The feathers then either don’t grow back, or grow back but keep falling out.

Today it’s thought that is condition is the result of a virus. So if your budgie has a French Molt then you need to keep it separate from other birds. You also need to give the budgie plenty of space to hop around and climb, as he won’t be able to fly.
