Children And BudgiesMany children want to have a pet, and that is great. Having a pet in childhood can be very rewarding. Your child gets a cute companion and also learns about responsibility. They learn to respect animals too. That said, if you buy your child a budgie the ultimate responsibility for his welfare lies with you, the parent. Children are very rarely responsible enough to look after a pet on their own. If your child gets bored of the budgie then they will probably not look after it properly. If your child is overloaded with school work, or gets a better offer from friends, then they might forget to feed the budgie or clean his cage out. At times like these you will have to look after the budgie yourself. What’s more, take into account that a budgie can live for fifteen years or more with the right care. Will your child have gone away to college or got a place of their own before then? If so, will they want to take the budgie with them or will you have to keep it. Consider whether or not you have the time and inclination to look after a budgie properly before you get one. You may well end up looking after it yourself. Despite pointing all of that out, I’m not against getting a budgie for your child/family. Loving a pet and enjoying it’s company is a great experience, and not just for children. These are just a few things that you need to take into consideration. Does Your Child Really Want A Budgie?Another thing to consider is whether a budgie is what your child really wants. Children often like pets that they can cuddle and stroke, as well as play with. Budgies are most definitely not cuddly pets. If your child does want a pet that they can take a more hands on approach with but you don’t want to get a larger animal like a dog or cat, then there are other options. You can get a hamster, guinea pig or pet rat for instance. No, you talked to your kid and they prefer a bird to a rodent. Excellent. Well then, if you’ve considered all of the above and you still want to get your child a budgie then it sounds like you’ll make the perfect match. Congratulations on starting your own flock.
