The Complete Bird Owner's Handbook Review
Since the author is a vet you expect this book to be thorough and informative. Dr. Gallerstein doesn’t let you down on that score. In my opinion, this book is one that few budgie owners should be without. In the interests of responsible bird ownership he kicks the book with a chapter on asking whether a bird is right for you. He talks about the level of care different birds need, and their characteristics including how much noise they make. Following on from this there is advice on bringing your new bird home and getting him settled in. There are tips on introducing the bird to his new owners etc. He talks about how to make this experience less stressful to your bird, which is nice. The section after this about furnishing your bird’s cage. Dr. Gallerstein gives you plenty of advice about what different sized birds need. He even includes a shopping list of essentials so that you don’t forget anything vital. Once your bird is at home and all settled in, you can move on to the section about nutrition. This section is well done, after reading it you will be clued up about what to feed your bird to keep him in top condition. As well as telling you how to feed your bird, the book also explains why you should feed them that way. I think this is very important, as if you understand why something is important, you are more likely to stick to it. The Complete Bird Owner's Handbook also covers how to hold various sized birds as well as general information on keeping your bird safe. General household dangers are discussed, as well as keeping your bird safe around children and other animals. The chapters on anatomy and physiology are detailed and fascinating. Though you wouldn’t expect anything less from a doctor of veterinary medicine. After that comes a guide on giving your bird first aid, and figuring out whether an illness is serious enough to warrant a visit to the vets. Armed with this book you are be able to find out exactly how sick your budgie is and act accordingly. ConclusionWhat this book is lacking is a decent amount of information on bird behavior. So it’s not quite the complete bird owner’s manual, but it is a very important work on bird care. I think that this book is a great addition to any bird owner’s bookshelf. I truly recommend it.
