Is A Budgie The Right Pet For Me?

Before you get a budgie you need to seriously consider what taking care of it means. You have to ask yourself if you can, and will, take care of it properly.

Even a large number of people who own budgies don’t know how to look after them properly. As a result you get a lot of unhappy budgies that die before their time.

The more popular budgies have got, the more research has been done on how to look after them. And more information is available to people who want to care for them well. And I guess that’s why you found this website.

So let’s go over a few things that you should consider before you bring a budgie home:

  • Will the house be empty for hours at a time? And will people in the house give attention to the budgie? If not, then it is better to either get two budgies to keep each other company, or not to get one at all.
  • Do you have other pets? How will a budgie fit in with your existing pets?
  • Will you always take the time to feed and water your budgie everyday? And will you clean his cage regularly? Be honest with yourself.
  • A well cared for budgie can live fifteen years or more. Are you willing to make that sort of commitment to looking after him?
  • Can you put some money aside each month for when you need to see a veterinarian?
  • Are you going to get angry if your budgie squawks all through your favorite TV show?

There are probably a few more questions to ask, but you get the idea.

Budgie are used to living in large groups, so they get lonely and depressed if they don’t have company. For this reason you need to take time regularly to spend with your budgie.

This need for company is often overlooked by people when they buy a budgie. So the budgie ends up sitting alone all day when they go to work. People usually just take into consideration the time it takes to feed and clean. So if you’re not going to be around, seriously consider getting two budgies or none at all.

Giving A Budgie As A Gift

As you can see from the questions above, buying a budgie needs serious consideration. You should never buy a pet for someone who has not expressly asked for it.

If someone has not decided to take on the responsibility for a pet, then they may not be fully committed to looking after it. If this happens then both the pet and owner will be unhappy.

I actually read somewhere the perfect solution to this problem. Instead of buying them a pet, buy them a gift certificate at the pet store. That way they can choose to get a budgie, or not, after they’ve had time to think about it.
