The Parrot Companion: Caring for Parrots, Macaws, Budgies, Cockatiels and More Review

From the rather long name you’ll notice that this book is about parrots in general, rather than just about budgies. This is useful if you haven’t bought your bird yet, as you can compare different types of parrot side by side. Budgies aren’t for everyone, right?

The author describes the differences in behavior and care needed for each type of bird. After reading it you will be able to make a well informed decision as to which bird is right for you.

Unlike some others on the market, this book doesn’t pretend that looking after a bird will always be easy. Chapter one deals with a long list of reasons why most people probably shouldn’t get a parrot.

What’s more, the book focuses strongly on responsible bird ownership. It advices you to think seriously before you get a bird as caring for your bird does take consistent time and effort.

Aside from being responsible and moral this book is rather informative. It covers all of the things that you need to know in some detail.

Topics covered in the book range from health and nutrition to behavior and socialization. All information is of the highest quality. But you wouldn’t expect anything less from Diane Low, who co-founded of The World Parrot Trust and edited its magazine.

The section on behavior will come in handy for quite a few people. It takes you through dealing with such problems as feather plucking, biting and screaming.

Conclusion

The Parrot Companion is a good book on parrot care. If you are just looking for information on budgies, then a different book is probably for you.
